How often do I remove and clean my pessary?
There is no consensus on how often a woman should remove and clean her pessary. This decision should be made based on each individual case and a discussion between the user and her healthcare providers. For example, some women may only insert the pessary for physical activity and others may leave it in for days. In some instances where the user does not feel comfortable or cannot remove and reinsert the pessary, it may remain inserted for months. In this case, the woman would return to her doctor every few months to have the pessary removed for cleaning and then reinserted at the same appointment.
Cleaning instructions:
- Remove pessary as per instructions.
- Run under warm water and dislodge secretions by rubbing the pessary with your fingers or a brush. Use a mild, unscented soap. Do not use anything harsh on the pessary as it may damage it.
- Rinse the pessary very well.
- Dry with a clean, non-shedding towel.
- If you are not reinserting immediately, store in a dry, safe place (face cloth or box).
- Reinsert as needed as per instructions.
- Your pessary should last 2-5 years if handled with care.
- Make it a habit to inspect your pessary for any cracks before inserting it. If you spot any, replace your pessary immediately, as cracks can harbour infection causing bacteria.
