When to seek medical attention when using a pessary
If you experience any of the below listed symptoms, remove your pessary, notify your physiotherapist and see your doctor. Medical treatment will be provided based on the reason for your symptoms. Sometimes your doctor will prescribe a topical estrogen cream, for example in the case of tissue irritation or increased vaginal secretions. You may be advised to stop wearing the pessary temporarily until the tissues have a chance to heal. When in doubt, seek medical attention.
- Yellow or green discharge
- Foul smelling discharge
- Vaginal itchiness
- Burning with urination
- Vaginal bleeding/spotting
- Trouble voiding your bladder or bowels
- New or worse pain
- Uncomfortable sensations of pressure or rubbing with continued pessary use
Overall, pessary use is a safe treatment approach to pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. Pessaries can reduce or abolish symptoms for many women so it is worth exploring this option before considering more invasive, permanent treatment options.
