Bladder Emptying Techniques

With pelvic organ prolapse (POP), it is imperative that one avoids straining to empty her bladder or bowels, as extra downward pressure on the pelvic floor and pelvic organs can worsen the symptoms of POP. With a cystocele, or bladder prolapse, it can be difficult to fully empty the bladder, since urine can pool in the pouch of prolapsed tissue. Below are some tips to help you fully empty without straining.

1. Voiding Posture

  • Sit with a slight bend forward at the hips, feet on the floor, elbows resting on thighs
  • Relax your abdomen, thighs, and buttocks
  • Take a few deep breaths and relax/lengthen/drop your pelvic floor muscles
  • Take the time to completely empty
  • Do not hold your breath or strain to empty

2. Double Void

  • Once you are finished emptying, wait for a moment and then change position:
    • shift your weight side to side
    • lean further forward or backwards
    • stand up and then sit down again
    • stand up and march on the spot and then sit down again
  • Relax and try to void again

3. External Compression

  • Place your hands above the pubic bone
  • Push in and scoop upwards
  • Lean forward and shift side to side
  • Come back to the midline and allow your bladder to empty
  • Do not hold your breath

4. Stimulation for Hesitancy

  • Relax your jaw and drop your pelvic floor
  • Stroke your inner thighs or tap above your pubic bone
  • If the stream still won’t start, don’t strain. Walk away and try again in 15-20 minutes.
